When you’re planning a wedding you always trying your best. Some of us fall victims of anxiety and end up considering many different wedding photographers with no clues. This happens because often we do not have any idea or clear indication on how to proceed and we just aim for a vague understanding of “right” or “the best”. There are many professional wedding photographers and many are the portofolios to check to decide. Many are also quite good creating even more confusion. For more serenity when planning a wedding, ours or someone else’s, it is well advised to take just a few simple measures to clear your mind and chose with more clarity. Often, indeed, when we choose our wedding photographer we are not 100% certain but then, when the big day is over, we realize that the pictures are really good and that there was nothing to be worried for in the first place. Let’s take this awareness, combined with a few simple principles, to hire the right wedding photographer for our wedding.
Before it can happen, a wedding is fundamentally something that needs to be managed properly. There are many costs and many are the variables to account for. You have to evaluate where you wish to invest and where to restrain yourself. Someone ends up hiring a good DJ for the party and then there are times where there is no DJ and guests put on the music on their own and, still, everyone is having the time of their life. Let’s evaluate our priorities and let’s establish a budget for every aspect of our wedding: some things last, others won’t, some things are essential, other mere decorations. I can say that the pictures I take, my work as a professional photographer, are something that last. You’ll have all those moments forever impressed on paper. It’s ok to try to save money but do not believe that you can just add some nice filters and the pictures will shot themselves, because if you use your phone, believe me, you can tell. So, decide on a budget before interviewing your wedding photographer so that you can choose on a clear basis, knowing what you want.
All of us have a style. For what I am worth, I chose reportage, or it chose me depending on how you see it. Spontaneous pictures that are more like documents of a moment in time than coffee table decorations. That does not imply that a style is all you can do. The path to becoming a professional wedding photographer goes trough mastering many styles and techniques. If you have preferences do not think that what you see in the portfolio is everything the photographer can do. Staged shots and portraits are fundamentals of the art of photography and all wedding photographers can do those. Some more than others, of course. If you like some of my pictures but they are not exactly what you hoped for, you can ask and I will do as you wish. If, for example, you like the way in which I play with colours or with contrast in a black and white picture but you would like more portrays or have a stage with a script, I will be happy to listen to you.
Any professional photographer worth of this name will be finely equipped and it might even be fond its camera. You will find on the website of this wedding photographer a technical description of the cameras employed, in my case the Canon EOS. There are obviously other really good cameras, like some Nikon, but in any case they will be introduced on the photographer’s website. Knowing what equipment the photographer employs will allow you to check with Google wether these are good or not. If this information is missing, or if in case you ask and don’t get a proper response and the photographer avoids the issue, maybe this photographer does not have what it takes and will only do the minimum required.
There are wedding photographers with the bad habit of throwing thousands of shots to their clients and let them decide with the excuse of not wanting to intrude. A matter of respect. These guys are often those loaded with films and full memories of digital cameras as they land countless shots during the wedding in the belief that the more the merrier. This is not true. When you choose the right wedding photographer it has to be one that stays with you the whole wedding day and then available to help you choose the pictures afterwards. One who will indeed provide you with many shots, but not aimless casual ones, that already underwent a first selection and maybe even some post production. You will find all these details in the photographer’s website or you may ask prior the hiring. If that’s not the case, maybe pick a better one.
Obviously, there are other factors depending on the circumstances. Someone asks for movie materials along the pictures, while others ask for specific post production editing. There are things to be discussed during the interview but those listed above are some fundamentals principles to go by, those that can make the difference. The only thing to add would be to contact the photographer way prior the wedding to find it available and to have the time to get to know and evaluate if this is the right wedding photographer for the best day of your life.
